At Key Stage 3 pupils use creativity and imagination to design and make products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts, considering their own and others’ needs, wants and values. Pupils will design, make, evaluate and apply technical knowledge when making their own products. Students have the opportunity to study cooking and nutrition, textiles and design and technology. Design and Technology is a subject that students thoroughly enjoy which enables them to be creative and ‘hands on’ in practical work.

Cooking and Nutrition

As part of their curriculum, pupils are taught how to cook and apply the principles of nutrition and healthy eating. Pupils will learn a range of practical skills which will enable them to make healthy, nutritious meals at home.

Students are taught to understand and apply the principles of nutrition and health, cook a variety of predominantly savoury dishes so that they are able to feed themselves and others a healthy and varied diet. They will become competent in a range of cooking techniques, selecting and preparing ingredients, using utensils and electrical equipment, apply heat in different ways, use an awareness of taste, texture and smell to decide how to season dishes and combine ingredients and also be able to adapt and use their own recipes. Students will also understand the source, seasonality and characteristics of a broad range of ingredients.


Students will have the opportunity to design and create their own products. They will learn the principles of health and safety when using different pieces of equipment. Students will learn how to hand stitch including a range of different types of stitches, how to sew a button, applique, working with different types of fabrics and understand their properties. In year 7 students will design and make their own soft toy and make their own felt.

In year 8 students will learn how to use a sewing machine and be able to use it safely to design and make their own cushion. Students will have the opportunity to be creative when printing onto fabric or using applique to design and make their cushion. Students will also evaluate textiles products that are currently available.

Design and Technology

At Halewood Academy we have a brand new workspace for students to study design and technology. The workspace is equipped with all the machinery and tools that are required to complete the course at KS3 and KS4. During the course students will investigate new and emerging technologies, environmental considerations, metals, woodwork, fibres, fabrics, paper and plastics. The subject includes a range of practical work based on the above materials. At KS3 students will complete a range of practical based projects using wood, metals and plastics.


At KS4 students are given the option to study:

  1. GCSE Food Preparation and Nutrition (AQA)
  2. GCSE Design and Technology (AQA)

1. Food Preparation and Nutrition is a very popular subject among students as they thoroughly enjoy the practical nature of the subject. Students will use the skills that they have learnt at KS3 to build up even more skills at KS4 to produce more challenging products. Students cook on a regular basis to produce a range of sweet and savoury products. In year 11 students will complete 2 pieces of controlled assessment based on the skills they have acquired in year 9 and 10.

The course is exciting and creative which focuses on practical skills. The course will ensure students develop an understanding of nutrition, food provenance and the working characteristics of food materials. Students will also learn about British and International culinary traditions, food science and food safety. At the heart of the qualification is a focus on developing practical cookery skills and a strong understanding of healthy eating and nutrition.

2.Design and Technology will prepare students to participate confidently and successfully in an increasingly technological world. Students will gain awareness and learn from wider influences on design and technology including historical, social, cultural, environmental and economic factors. Students will get the opportunity to work creatively when designing and making and apply technical and practical expertise.

Students will be using the new design and technology workspace which includes a range of equipment, machinery and tools to make a range of products using wood, metals, plastics, fabrics and textile products.
